The Student Council (StuRa) is the elected representative body for the students at TU Ilmenau. It represents the students in dealings with the university, the city, the state, and the federal government, and communicates with many committees at our university.
Since the StuRa’s work spans many areas, it is further divided into various departments and working groups. You can find introductions to our student committees and their members on this website. So if, for example, you’d like to learn more about the work of your department student council, the doctoral student representative body, or a specific department, you’ve come to the right place.
Tasks
The Student Council’s responsibilities as a body representing the student body are diverse. The Thuringian Higher Education Act, in Sections 79 through 82, sets forth the framework for what we are expected to do and promote. In particular, Section 80(1) (Responsibilities of the Student Body) forms the basis for the substantive actions of the Student Council and the department student councils. It states:
The student body has the following responsibilities:
- Representing the entire student body of the university within the scope of its statutory powers,
- Advocating for students’ interests in higher education policy,
- Advancing the academic, social, and cultural interests of the students,
- Promoting political education and a sense of civic responsibility among students,
- Promoting voluntary student sports, to the extent that the university is not responsible for them,
- Promoting the integration of international students,
- Fostering supraregional and international student relations.
The Student Body Bylaws are based on these principles and set forth the specific structure of our university’s student body.
